Buck Owens had been playing and writing music for years before gaining notoriety and eventually being recognized as one of the fathers of the “Bakersfield Sound.” This CD is a complete collection of his early demos and commercial recordings, made in 1955 and 1956.
Already present are some of the stylistic elements that later became Buck’s trademark with his hard-twanging band, the Buckaroos. Owens completists will enjoy hearing alternate versions, as well as songs that were later re-recorded for Capitol. The 1988 version of “Hot Dog,” for example, is sleepy compared to the early rock & roll-influenced recording presented here.
If you only know Buck Owens as the pickin’-and-grinnin’ co-host of Hee Haw, this is a good place to start digging deeper.
