Half a decade after his variety show on ABC ended, Johnny Cash began hosting an annual Christmas special for CBS, bringing a down-home (and frequently more reverent) element to the body of holiday specials made popular by the likes of Andy Williams and Bing Crosby.
For his second such special, in 1977, Johnny brought in some of his former Sun Records labelmates to help pay tribute to Elvis Presley, who had died just two months before the show’s taping. The program is hardly somber, though, as the set list will attest. Johnny and June’s guests include Roy Clark, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers.
