Half a decade after his variety show on ABC ended, Johnny Cash began hosting an annual Christmas special for CBS, bringing a down-home (and frequently more reverent) element to the body of holiday specials made popular by the likes of Andy Williams and Bing Crosby.
For his fourth such special, in 1979, Johnny, along with his father, Ray Cash, and older brother Roy, takes us for a visit to his childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas. Johnny and June’s guests include Anne Murray, then at the height of her popularity; Tom T. Hall, whom Cash introduces as “my very favorite songwriter”; and Andy Kaufman (yes, that Andy Kaufman).
