Initially a one sheet, two color poster, the original woodblocks were reduced down to a window card, redrawn by our intern Teresa and re-carved from linoblocks for a short run of Shriner posters in spring 2011. Common sense and an eye for quality led us to rethink our wording in the copy and call this image to duty as a celebration of the old era of circus posters historically designed, printed, and carved at Hatch. The headline “Something to Roar About” pays homage to the original Hatch mantra “Something To Crow About”, with, of course, a rooster as our mascot. Since we put our teeth into our work we’ve included the lion and the tiger as animal representatives of our shop because we too are surviving as an endangered species in this era of digital design. Size: 14” x 22”.
